The Monash International Affairs Society presents a fascinating discussion group about political extremism!
Just like boy vs. girl, night vs. day, north vs. south and Monash vs. Melbourne, the left-right divide in politics is one of the most important binaries making up our world today. However, unlike the magnetic poles, opposites in this binary don’t attract. History is replete with instances of leftists killing rightists and rightists killing leftists; from Franco and Mussolini to Mao and Lenin, the left-right divide is responsible for some of the deadliest political massacres that the world has ever seen.
In this discussion group, we will explore the dark side of political ideology through a documentary looking at the 1965-66 Indonesian anti-communist purge, in which more than 500,000 people were killed by government forces. ‘The Act of Killing’ is a critically acclaimed documentary that won Best Documentary Feature at the 2014 BAFTAs and was nominated for the same award at the Oscars.
As always, there will be free food, good company and great discussion, so come and join us this Tuesday for your weekly dose of international affairs!
