International Women’s Day celebrates the social, economic and political achievements of women and the progress made towards gender equality. It provides a platform to reflect on issues that affect women around the world.
Women’s participation and representation in society is an important factor not just to empower women, but in achieving a more equal world, as well as a more just one. The female demographic, however, is not monolithic.
This International Women’s Day, MIAS focuses on women whose narratives and issues aren’t usually included in mainstream discourses, such as women of colour, LGBTQIA women and women with disabilities. While traditionally thought to be “niche” issues, it is important that these narratives are discussed more openly in mainstream circles and not just in niche ones, if gender equality is to be truly realized.
For our first discussion night of the semester we will have the following topics of discussion:
• The issue of under (or lack of) representation of certain sections of women
• (Micro) Aggressions against women
• The drawbacks of non-inclusive, mainstream feminism
DATE AND TIME: Wednesday 12th March 17:45-19:00
